The collection started almost 20 years ago by a local motor mechanic who started restoring engines in his spare time. After a number of years the mechanic found that the restored engines were taking up too much room in his workshop. Following discussions with tow of the local retired farmers, it was then decided to approach the local district council asking for their help in providing an area where the collection could be housed. About this time the old power generating building became available. In 1992 the museum was established in the Old Powerhouse, hence the name. Since then the museum has gone ahead with now around 280 restored stationary engines. All these engines have been running since restoration. Some of the restored engine are a 1921 Model T Ford motor, 1905 International four horse power motor, 1916 Lauson eight horse power motor, 1906 Old six horse power motor, 1915 Evinrude outboard motor and a 1920 Hercules six horse power ex Ooldea. Comments in our visitor book say, "that we have one of the best collections in Australia".
