Write a reviewThe original statue of two horsemen and their mounts was irreparably damaged during the Suez riots in 1956 and had to be sent to Italy from Port Said to be recast in bronze. Bullet marks on the stonework were patched over but are still visible. The war memorial was unveiled at Mount Clarence in 1964. A steep winding road to the memorial site reaches almost to the top of Mount Clarence, from which the views are breathtaking. Albany was the embarkation point for Australian troops in the first World War and for many their last view of the island continent. A special dawn service is held every ANZAC day at the war memorial. The first dawn service was celebrated on this Mount in 1930.
