Welcome to Evandale, Tasmania - Home to world-famous Penny Farthing Championships and the Glover Art Prize worth over $30,000. Situated only 20 km south of Launceston and 5 km from the main highway and Launceston Airport it is a National Trust classified Georgian village, popular with tourists for its unspoiled heritage buildings and streetscape. Allow half a day to just wander around the village assisted by a Heritage Walk booklet available from the Tourist Information Centre or if time is short, at least consider taking a stroll along High Street, reputedly one of the most attractive historic main streets in Tasmania. Our enthusiastic staff at the centre have the local knowledge to provide you all the information on what to see do. There is a wide range of self-contained colonial B&B's and hotel accommodation available to suit every budget in the town and surrounding areas and bookings can be made at the centre. Evandale's famous people include 'Red' Kelly father of Ned, John Batman founder of Melbourne, Australian landscape artist, John Glover and Lt Col. Harry Murray VC, CMG, DSO and Bar, the most highly decorated allied soldier in World War 1. The Evandale market, held every Sunday, offers everything from bric-a-brac to antiques, local farm produce to fine Tasmanian cheeses and gourmet foods. Take the alternative scenic wine route back to Launceston along Relbia Road where you can visit numerous excellent boutique wineries or if traveling south towards Hobart, don't forget to call in to the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce factory and sample their amazing range of desert or savory sauces.
