Write a reviewStKilda has a new hidden treasure.Melbourne hospitality entrepreneur Boris kanter and Mike Kanter have conceived the perfect mix of opulence and decadence with their new local St Kilda wine bar, Laika.Formerly the location of the infamous Madam Jo Jo's, and christened after the whobecame the first living mammal to the Earth, this 1930's inspired neo classic gem filled with period fittings and antiques that Boris has collected on his global travels is casually elegant, serves sophisticated vinos and tapas-size dishes which makes it the perfectplace to gather any night of the week. Stunning polished floorboards greet you, beautiful wall moldings surround you, theeclectic antique collection amazes you and the spectacular wrought-iron spiralstaircase either leads you up to endless wine racks on the Juliet balconycellar or seductively down the stairs to the "Den", a private wine room, for amore intimate evening for few or many..... then the glistening black granite bar filled with every top shelf spirit you can image ready to be shaken or stirred. You will find yourself dropping in for a quick drink and end up snuggling in for a longsession of food and wine as you don't even notice the time passing by.Laika's cocktails will dazzle you with Paul (the mixologist direct from Match inLondon) combining obscure combinations as he mixes and shakes up anything yourheart or taste buds desire. A clear favourite as you're watching the beautifulSt Kilda sunset is the Silver Angel (a delicate mix of Vodka, apple, mandarintopped of with a splash of champagne).Everynook and cranny is lavishly drenched in leather or plush fabrics; it'scomfortable and sexy. Mike and his staff are casually elegant in their 1930's relaxed black tie and are efficiency personified, craving to help you through the long and impressive drinks list(some 300 bottles of champagne, wine and spirits). Laika's crowd is a mix of 30 something', regulars, hospitality folk and local heroeslounging in the booths, soaking up the sun or taking place at the bar allenjoying a new local treasure away from the hustle and bustle of Fitzroy street. The kitchen is open tilllate, and the bar closes sometime after 3am. It's not an in-your-face glam, stillin its own way this compact low-lit bar is positively dripping with an air ofseduction and affluence
