Kapunda's claim to fame as Australia's oldest mining town all started in 1842 when a man named Francis Dutton discovered copper in the fields while searching for some of his stray sheep. Later he and his neighbour, Charles Bagot, who also knew about the copper, purchased the land and grew an empire. Our "Taste of the Region" Interpretive display gives visitors a glimpse of the Region of Light from the wine growing districts of Seppeltsfield to the former home of Sir Sidney Kidman the Cattle King. "Eringa". Donated to the Education Department in 1921, his home is part of the Kapunda High School. Pick up a Heritage Trail Map from the Visitor Information Centre and explore the historic buildings and Australia's Oldest Commercial Copper Mine. Trails abound in the Light Region the Heysen, Mawson or Kidman Trail all start or past through Kapunda. Or take a short walk through the Pines Reserve or spend an afternoon discovering the Museum and Bagot's Fortune. Stay at our wonderful Tourist Park or beautifully appointed Bed & Breakfast accommodation houses. Situated between the Barossa & the Clare Valley and only 1 hour drive to the Murray, Kapunda is a central location with modern conveniences blended with history and some of the best wine producers in Australia.
